Left handed myths and misunderstandings
It is NOT a myth that left-handers have trouble with all sorts of everyday articles and tools. Have a look at our range of fully left-handed items to see how we can help solve the problems.Left-handers do tend to do badly whenever there is any talk of superstition or things that cannot be understood.

Folklore and Superstitions
For thousands of years, the Devil has been associated with the left hand in various ways and is normally portrayed as being left-handed in pictures and other images. In the seventeenth century it was thought that the Devil baptised his followers with his left-hand and there are many references in superstitions to the "left-hand side" being associated with evil. As an example, in France it was held that witches greet Satan "avec le bras gauche" or with the left hand. It is also considered that we can only see ghosts if we look over our left shoulder and that the Devil watches us over the left shoulder.- Evil spirits lurk over the left shoulder - throw salt over this shoulder to ward them off. In Roman times, salt was a very valuable commodity, giving rise to the word "salary" and was considered a form of money at the time. If salt was spilled, that was considered very bad luck, that could only be avoided by throwing some of the spilled salt over your left shoulder to placate the devil.
- Joan of Arc (burned at the stake in 1431 for being a heretic and a witch) was not necessarily left-handed, she may have been depicted in this way to make her seem evil.
- Getting out of bed with the left foot first means that you will have a bad day and be bad tempered . i.e. getting out of bed the wrong side.
- A ringing in the right ear means that someone is praising you. In the left ear it means that someone is cursing or maligning you.
- An itchy right palm means that you will receive money. An itchy left palm means you will have to give money.
- Wedding rings worn on the third finger of the left hand originated with the Greeks and Romans, who wore them to fend of evil associated with the left-hand
- The Romans originally considered the left to be the lucky side and used for augury. However, they later changed back to the Greek methods and favoured the right-hand side.
- The right hand often symbolises 'male' while the left hand is 'female'.
- If you hear the sound of a cuckoo from the right it will be a lucky year. If the sound comes from the left it will be unlucky.
- The Meru people of Kenya believed that the left-hand of their holy man has such evil power that he had to keep it hidden for the safety of others.
- If your right eye twitches you will see a friend, if it's your left eye that twitches you'll see an enemy.
- When dressmaking it's believed to be bad luck to sew the left-hand sleeve onto a garment before the right sleeve.
- When leaving to go on a journey, if your right foot itches you're bound to have a good journey. If your left foot itches it will end in sorrow.
- It is thought to be bad luck to pass a drink to another person with your left-hand or anti-clockwise around a table.
Superstitions that are IN FAVOUR of Lefties
- Anyone who digs coal out of the ground from under his or her left foot in the Spring will have very good luck.
- If you apply an ointment with the forefinger of the right hand the sore will not heal. This is because this finger is said to be the 'poison' finger.
- The ancient Zuni tribe considered left-handedness a sign of good luck. They believed the left was the older and wiser
Social behaviour
- Passing or pouring wine with the left hand leads to bad luck.
- A left-handed toast is tantamount to a curse on the victim.
- Driving on the left - started so that horse riders could use their whips in the right-hand to fend off other road users - see more about this
Religion
- Christianity is strongly based towards the right hand. It is the right had that gives the blessing and make the sign of the cross.
- On one count, the bible contains over 100 favourable reference to the right-hand and 25 unfavourable references to the left-hand. E.g.: The right hand of the lord doeth valiantly, the right hand of the lord is exalted (Psalm 118 vv15,16)
- The left hand does worst in the parable of the sheep and goats. The sheep are set on Christ's right hand and the goats on the left. Those on the right inherit the kingdom of god while those on the left depart into everlasting fire (to quote Matthew 25: verse 41: Then he will say unto those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”)
- The situation is much the same in Judaism and Islam. In Islam, the left hand and everything associated with it is seen as unclean. This stems from the Middle Eastern custom of using the left-hand and water instead of toilet paper and, more recently, of using the left handed to hold toilet paper for the same function. This is the origin of the term "cack-handed"
Animals
- We have had a report that the majority of parrots are left-footed - does any one know anything about this or any other animal left-handed facts?
- There is also a report of polar bears being left-handed, but we need to get more information.
Trivia
- Officials in Mensa, the high IQ society believe as many as 20% of their members are left-handed.
- The first recorded Siamese twins born in 1811 were joined at the waist. Their names? Chang and Eng, which simply meant 'Left and Right'
- The figurehead on the Cutty Sark is a left-handed witch.
- Studies have shown that left-handers are more likely to have allergies than right-handers - aahtishoooo!!
- Most left-handers, when drawing figures face them to the right.

Also, in the same vein as above, my wife was originally left-handed, but forced right-handed by her mother. I did not know this after 25 years of marriage until she injured her left hand and was unable to wipe herself cleanly after using the toilet. It was something she was used to doing. Evidently, her mother was not in the bathroom to force her to use her right hand and she continued using her left hand.
Please reply if you have left handed stories.
Thank You.
Love, Your very stuggled left handed friend Trinity
My handwriting is awesome so I have been told and yes I would have to say very understandable
I love drawing so to a certain point I know I have some artistic in me. And another thing I found out is that everything grows faster on my left side, my hair, my nail.
I personally think lefthanded people are smart.
1. Being left-handed / right-handed has nothing to do with being evil or good. I found that it is linked to the age of the mother when the child is born. My studies have shown that an 18-year old mother has a 15% chance to have a lefty, and a 28-year old birth will have a 15% chance of producing a right-handed child, with the cross-over happening in between.
2. When you start a conversation with lefties regarding them being a lefty, most respond with "because I'm smart" or something similar. This is mostly correct because in most cases the mother was more mature when they were born, and couldn't be bothered about talking moo-moo or listening to cr^ppy music. They have more sophisticated taste in food, music, language, etc than the younger mothers, which is automatically picked up by the toddler. This sophistication spills over in the lefty's interest fields, and they often choose a creative career instead of a structured career, e.g. Art, Accounting instead of Engineering.
3. The number of lefthanders is increasing, because the new generation tend to get their careers underway and become mothers at a later age, resulting in more lefties being born. Yet the world is not changing the ergonomics of items to suit the lefties. A good example is the layout of a camera. Although many professional photographers are left-handed, the controls are still on the right side of the camera. Missed business opportunities by Canon, etc??
These are just some of my observations over many years .....
Lefty gang or GTFO!!!
I, too, have an interest in left-handedness from the spiritual persepctive. So far, I've seen the following ideas:
That men and women carry their two selves on 'mirror sides'. So, the man's good spirit is on his R and devil on the L. For females, the good spirit is on the L and the devil on the R.
I often wondered about cultures that write from R to L, like Hebrew. Hebrew interests me, in particular, because of the Bible. It appears that Jewish men were primarily L-handed in the Old Testament. And male R-handedness may have become dominant after a 'long period of adjustment' after spiritual changes after Jesus' arrival-departure. (And in cultures like the Essenes before Jesus came.) And then R-handed men started developing 'higher thinking', like in Greece.
So, it was in the best interest for men to kill witches who were L-handed because they did not want them spiritually connected to their 'good' side - it seems that a 'prophetess' will be L-handed. A R-handed woman would be looser morally, and men tend to favor such results, dontcha know.
Oh, another thing you may find interesting... Check out artists like DaVinci and other greats and look at the R foot on many, many of the female figures. It will either be cocked outward or, most often - it'll be a goat's foot and the R hand twisted/scrawny in some way. If you look at Vitruvian Man by DaVinci, the male's L foot is crooked and his R foot straight. Wikipedia helps a great deal in making the increased magnification VERY large. I thank them silently often.
I've spent a lifetime trying to figure out where the rage in me comes from. I am (mousy-blond) R-handed but don't know if it's from birth or training. I'm youngest only female with three older brothers - one of whom is red-haired and L-handed. His wife is L-handed and spiritually connected (Bible, not as a prophetess). But what I do have is the R foot everted, like my mother (who is L-handed also). I've trained it to walk straight since feeling self-conscious about it since high school (intuitive, as I didn't know about sinister stuff then) - but I always know it's there just waiting for an opportunity to 'show off'.
I enjoyed your article - particularly the parrot and polar bear example, as I've often run across quotes about women being 'parrots'. Someday, maybe someone will give us the Answers instead of just deepening the questions, eh? LOL
Your fellow leftie,
Jessica

I have donated a dress to charity today, worn only once, it had a zip on the left, from the waist to underarm. Awkward enough for anyone, but impossible for a left hander as I could not rach over and use my right hand without getting the fabric caught in the zip. I had to cut myself out of it as I was stuck! Anyone else have any clothing fastener problems?
I have this high-waist black mini skirt I've adored for years but the darn zipper is located on the left side, so whenever I try to wear it I almost always cut myself...It's really a shame.
Writes like an left handed person. When I was little she let me choose which handed I wanted to use and my choice was right handed. It's weird because I come from a family
of left handers. There are more females in my family than
males (people believe if you have more than 7 generation of women born than you are witches) and we have had a lot of lost in the family mostly the left handed members
I am also a Virgo so I think alot. My left handed family member are and were some of the greatest people you would ever want to meet. True southern hospitality.
on your faith not with your hand so if theres any religous lefties out there
just ignore satan
but if this myth is true im going to go right
I observed in her freak-out, her face distorted into something quite unpleasant.
If you see where I am going here, you will see that what I am saying is that we are victims of our surroundings. I was taught many of these things when young, and, therefore, learned to do them with my right hand. Those that I was not taught early in life were things I did with my left.
That said, there is a possibility that you are partially ambidextrous, but perhaps you should ask your parents if they taught you to use your right over your left.....that is what happened to my mother.
my boyfriend is naturally right handed person, but in baseball he pitches and throws and bats left. Crazy right?
But I see it as lucky...
Anyway there are a lot of crazy superstitions about lefties being "EVIL"! I didn't realize that!....aha that is society for you, always picking on someone...
As of yesterday the BBC news stated that there are now
7 billion people on this planet, therefore meaning 7% of
7 billion*
Btw, if your going to say it's quite close so who cares consider
That your forgetting 1 billion people (1,000,000,000).
- Green Lantern villian Sinestro is left handed, and therefore wears his Lantern Ring on his left hand instead of his right. One of the meanings of the word 'sinister' is left-handed!
- One of Captain America's primary villains, Baron Helmut Zemo, is also left-handed. He's known for accidentally scarring his own face using Adhesive X. Hmph!
Very proud to be a lefty! The only one in my family...

IM ALSO A SCORPIO MY BIRTH DATE IS THE FIRST DAY LIBRA ENDS AND SCORPIO STARTS
I'm a loner really. I mean, I have a little group of friends (3-5) but that's about it. I'm very imaginative and I can draw pretty well, but I'm rubbish at maths. I'm good at English. I really like animals, and I like nature and peace and quiet. I prefer classical music to modern music. I HATE scary stuff. I only watch trailers for scary movies, I can't work up the guts to actually watch a proper scary movie. I also don't like roller-coasters ect.
I love being left handed.
P.s:
I'm just writing random stuff now, but I have six things in common with Charles Darwin:
1. He studied animals, I want to be a Zoologist.
2. We're both left handed (obviously).
3. I'm agnostic. He was a type of agnostic.
4. He had a daughter called Annie (my nickname).
5. We were both born on the 12th of February.
6. Both born in Shropshire, England.
Even so, be wary about employment involving electronic blades as it is more dangerous to handle these "wrong handed" or with the blade exposed and debris flying into your face "because you're the only lefty in the construction crew".
At the same time, its a groovy little way to be different. Seriously, though i wish someone had told me that the effect of the difference is so "pervasive". No one persecuted me THANK GOD, but it was still a bit overwhelming at times when I suffered but no one nor the system even noticed "because they were all right handed and just hadn't thought about it."
(1913 - 2006) was left handed and the shortest lived U.S. President, John F. Kennedy (1917 - `63) was right handed! Now, both the main figures in the world politics, U.S. President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron, are left handed!
There has been a great tradition of left-handed presidents, especially in recent years. This is a list that appears on a lot of websites...
James A. Garfield (1881) 20th
Herbert Hoover (1929-1933) 31st
Harry S. Truman (1945-1953) 33rd
Gerald Ford (1974-1977) 38th
Ronald Reagan (1981 -1989) 40th (actually a right-handed writer)
George H.W. Bush (1989-1993) 41st
Bill Clinton (1993-2001) 42nd
There is some doubt about Hoover and Reagan as some images seem to show both of then writing right-handed, but often images get flipped unintentionally. Our "Left Handed History Of The World" book includes Reagan among the left-handed presidents - was he made to change hands for writing? Does anyone know for sure so we can put this to bed? Ronald Reagan - a switched left-hander?
What IS interesting is that BOTH of the leading presidential candidates this year are left-handed writers - Barack Obama and John McCain. Barack Obama was a nominee (and eventual winner) for the Left Hander Of The Year vote - click here to see a profile and more information.
Barak Obama left handed John McCain left handed
They both seem to have a bit of a "hook" in the writing style as well! If one of them does become the next US president (and assuming Reagan is a natural left-hander), that will be 5 out of the last 7 (71%) when only about 10% of the population are left-handed - Go Lefties!

Im not good at religion or maths and animals are kinda hard even though i love them!
My parents are both right handed and im the only one in my whole family generation who was left handed so im proud because i am very unique!
I'm also a dancer and i do left sided splits and all my friends at the studio look at me like im a freak .
Its hard for me to be a succesful dancer because most dance companies want you to be able to do right turns and twists, and splits and leaps . But I guess I have to get used to it .
if they make fun of you tell them to shutup because god made yo uleft handed for a special reason there are very few left handed people in the world so treat it as a unique gift i am also left handed i no how i feels and yes it is very agravating when people have somthing to say so tell every one who makes fun of you that you have a special gift and they dont!
Im 22. I usually wear my wristwatch on my right hand. and once I tried to wear it on right hand but I got confused with the time. I trained myself not to get confused and it was a success. yeay.
My direct family has 8 members. 2 parents, 4 older sisters and 1 younger sister. I'm the only male and left-hander. 1 of my 4 aunts (and 4 uncles) is left handed too. Coincidentally, or not, this aunt is colour-blind like me
I love it because my daughter draws lovely and she is into writing, not typing , plays and skits. The girl is for sure super smart. when people see her writing and the neatness of it, they ask her as if they do not see her ohhh are you a lefty? lol!
I am an IT/Webmaster as well as being an Ad Artist. I was born left-handed, but use both hands in mirrored movement to tie my shoes, use my right hand for the mouse/trackball on my computers, my right hand for lift-support and menial tasks and my left for writing, eating, drinking and high-precision tactile movement.
I've never honestly thought of it as being and Algorithm/Heuristics thing, but I suppose that makes sense. thanks for the insight!
There is, as far as I know, //one// lefty on my entire family tree. Except me, that is. That's my great grandfather that I've never met. My great grandfather on my mother's father's side. I'm a tad ambidextrous, seeing as I can kick a ball with either foot, brush my hair with either hand, and small things like that. I could never write or cut with my right hand, though.
What does that make me?
its weird...
my right hand is faster but when i write with both they look the same.
i write with whatever hand is closer to the pencil.
i play bass lefty
cut meat with left
brush with right
throw with right
its half and half
it makes me feel special when people are like "whoa! you write with both?!"
:D <3
I still love being left handed.
and my parrot jino (african grey parrot) is a lefty too hehe :)
I'm actually doing my school speach on how 'you're lucky to be a lefty' so thats why i'm on this site.
It was very helpfull :)
I write left handed
Eat left handed (ie spoon in left, dno if thats normal)
wear a watch on my right wrist.
kick right footed. i cant kick with my left.
throw right handed. cant kick with my right.
play snooker left handed. cant play with my right.
use scissors right handed. cant cut with left.
I was left handed after I came back from Hong Kong with my Dad, who just so happens to be a lefty as well. I think I saw him use his left hand, and followed. You know children, they tend to follow what their parents do.
And I feel really bad for the people who were forced to be right handed. I've never had extremes, considering I've been born within the 1990s, but when I returned from Hong Kong, my mother found out I was left handed. She began to yell at me to switch my usage on to my other hand. I think it is only based on all the religious things going on. But, I find it unfair how some people are judged based on the hand they use. They generalize people, and I find that we're all unique in our own way.
My dad was schooled in the USA and was forced to be right handed, he is dyslexic and we discovered (due to an accident) that he can write more clearly and his spelling is better if he uses his left. Sadly though he cannot permanantly switch to the left side now as it's just too hard for him to concentrate on it.
My 19 year old daughter is ambidextrous and so was my Gran. Hubbie is a rightie though, means he has to do any work in the house involving scissors!!
Thank you for allowing me to sound off about this very real problem we have with teachers, schools, and left-handed students. James from the Mojave Desert in Southern California, USA
I was very lucky when I was at school. We used to supply our own pens. As a result, I used nibs which were designed for left handers. Fountain pens had largely disappeared and cartridge pens were the norm. This saved having to reach for the inkwell which was always on the right hand side of the desk. The left handed equipment I use now - rulers, sharpeners etc wasn't available then, so I had to adapt.
I had an excellent metal work teacher who helped his left handed students a lot. He was left handed himself and taught us how to use right handed equipment.
Chas
My mother went to the principil to ask if I could be given extra help in school, he point blankly refused, he like my teacher believed it was my own fault and that I had to just learn how to write with my right hand. I pretty much had to fend for myself and tech myself how to write because my teacher wasn't interested.
Im 19 now and my writing is a lot better now, the only thing that has angered me is the fact that in every exam I have ever sat I have been marked down because of my writing, and believe me I try to write the best I can.
Seriously, some one needs to have a sit down with all staff in education, especially those who are in charge of helping and teching young children how to write.
Courtenay
I was the only leftie of my family but married my husband a leftie too and we have three sons and middle one and youngest are lefties.
This is weird. I'm also a third born and left hander! My brother and sister are both right handed. I have a nephew who is not third born who is left handed. His mother is also a lefty. My sisters' grand-daughter is left handed and she's a third born!
Chas
Sometimes the right-handed world gives me some troubles but I manage.
After all, I love being left-handed!!!!!
My teachers also tried to have me switch but never succeeed. I did write right-handed for several weeks in 9th grade after shattering my left arm.
The main odd thing is I catch left handed but throw right handed so I have to first catch, then remove my mitt and then throw.
Only leftie in the family and all of my kids are righties ;-(
The biggest laugh(at myself I hasten to add)is a picture of me marching in a parade,& guess who started off on the wrong foot & the picture shows me putting my LEFT foot forward when everyone else was on their right.
When you have an explanation you have a chance to find your strong points and use them with full power.
Please encourge children being lefthanded, encourge them to use their imagination, good instinct ond other advantages.
At school left-handedness was treated as nothing different. I had a metal work teacher who was left-handed. He was able to help left-handed students use certain tools which were right-handed.
At home everything is set for left-handed use. The kitchen tools are all left-handed. The kitchen is set up with everything being placed for easy left-handed use. I'm a hobbyist model maker and my work shop is also set up for left-handed use. The computer has its' mouse controls set up "in reverse"!
At work, I'm in an office on my own - bliss! This means the computer is programmed with left-handed mouse controls. My desk is set up for left-handed use with all important things on the left. I've even got a left-handed ruler on my desk. It's one thing that will never go on walkabout!
For sport, in cricket I bat right-handed, but bowl left-handed. Judo is a right-handed sport. However, many years ago an instructor taught me to throw left-handed. It sometimes works. If nothing else, it causes the opponent to be wary
I am so glad it never happenned to me, I was at school in the fifties and had no problems like that, my Mother who is now 86 is also a lefty and tells me she too was lucky and did not suffer any abuse.
I did have problems in my nursing career as in the days I trained all the trolley settings were righthanded and all procedures taught that way even to which side of the bed you should stand
I would like to believe that attitudes are changing
It's weird, I am one of 5 cousins (me and my sister and my 3 cousins from my aunty), none of our parents OR grandparents are left handed but 4 of us cousins are!
We don't know where we got it from - am guessing my mum's side as it is her sister's children who I am talking about. We sometimes wonder if one of our Great-Grandparents / Grandparents was left handed but it was 'trained' out of them at a young age??
L
So no matter the supersittions or what cultures difine as "right" or wrong I am PROUD to be a left!
Just wish the lefthander things like pens and all were available in India too.
Thank you everyone....Keep writing.
Initially thought that only few animals such as chimps and horses have the ‘handedness’ attribute, research shows that cats too have preferences about their paws. A female cat is more likely to be right-handed, and males left-handed. If you have a pet at home, offer him/her some food in a jar and see which paw they use to fish it out.
As for allergies, I don't have any at all and I am certainly a leftie.
I am a Lefty and in my side of the world (South Asia) giving money frm your left hand especially in the morning is taboo. And people dont accept:-)
Especially when (while I was in the Army) being able to use a weapon on either the right or the left side (it depended on the cover available - what's the point in shooting around the right-hand side of an obstacle when the bulk of your body is exposed? Use the other (right hand side) and this obscures your body from oncoming fire!).
Having said that, the majority of weapons, sports equipment and musical instruments favour the right-handed. I decided to learn how to play stringed instruments right-handed as I couldn't afford one of my own at the time. However, when playing the piano, try playing the melody with the left hand - it's much easier!! Jerry Lee Lewis learned this from an early age! It also sounds great!
While I'm neither right nor left-handed, I use whichever gives me the better advantage! Try playing tennis, squash, or snooker against a left-handed opponent (if you're right-handed, that is) - it's awkward! Better again, try playing an opponent with two raquets (in tennis or squash) - they haven't a hope!! Even against an old man like me!!!!
If you're a lefty or righty, enjoy!! Like everything else there are good and bad ones among us!!
Harry
Altho sometimes if I am getting competitive I will bat left handed in cricket or rounders as the bowlers get really confused!
Also I like to change hands for tennis/squash etc because my backhand is so rubbish!!!
I like being a lefty :)
x
Now my wife, step daughter and i all lefties. My step son is the only right-handed one in the house and so gets called "cack handed" but only as a joke :D
