Do you hang your clothes left-handed?

Author: Anything Left-Handed Categories: Left handed life, Everyday & Practical
Clothes hung left-handed, facing to the left

There are all sorts of things that we do "our" way without realising that it is different. Someone pointed out to me recently that all the clothes in my wardrobe were hanging the "wrong" way (a right-hander of course), but I had never really thought about it.

All my shirts and jackets were hanging facing to the LEFT (it is not normally that neat, I spread them out for the photo!).

Use this link to go to our Facebook Poll on this.

We have a whole page about this sort of thing and loads of comments on what people do differently:
Is it just me… or is it a left-handed thing?

I've also been told I put coffee mugs "backwards" by right hands partners.

I too had never thought about the direction the clothes faced. Sure enough when I checked they were ALL facing left. Pretty cool I think.

I always hang my clothes facing left. I would always hang my husbands shirts facing left. He never complained, he just went in and turned them around.
  4. Joan Vincent
I hang my clothes facing left (am left-handed) and my husband (a right-hander) hangs his clothes facing right.

Just recently, I discovered my clothing faced left. This was awkward since it forced me to reach in for garments with my right hand. Using velvet hangers, all the hooks faced left but I switched them to face right. It's much easier when reaching in my closet for items to wear that the placement is equally important. This setup allows me to get dressed in the morning --everything is orderly and in its proper place.

Not thought about it before, but my wife faces right. However, checked my right handed daughter and hers face left like mine!

All of my clothes hang facing right ,regardless of how the closet door opens. For me its about using my left hand to retreave or hang the garment:-)

I had never given this hanging of my clothes any thought. It is
just something I have done all my adult life

Interesting, I am profoundly left-handed and I hang my clothes facing right. My right handed relatives hang their clothes facing left.

Haha, that is so funny. I never realised it until you raised it. I went and checked and sure enough, clothes are facing left. I also checked a wardrobe on the opposite side of the wall and it was the same there. I also appreciated your resolution of my lifelong problem of kissing cheeks on the opposite side and the embarrassment of a full-on lip smacker because I was heading for the opposite cheek! Guess that makes me a true left-hander.

This begs the question "which hand do you use to place the clothes hanger on the rail". I always use my left hand which for me at least means the clothes always face to the right.

I hang clothes up and unhang them with my left hand, but it honestly depends on which side of the closet they're on. For something way on the left, I use my left hand and if on the right side, switch to the right hand. Just always seemed easier that way.

I seem to recall my father teaching me to hang my clothes facing left, as in, when you look at the shirts you are seeing the left sleeve.

When I enlisted in the US Army, I learned that we have to hang all clothing facing left. So far as I know, this has been the standard for decades, if not since the Civil War.

I also found that when putting a paper in a filing cabinet horizontally that the header would be to the right facing forward. My wife who’s a opposite(righty) complains the the coffee maker and cups are setup wrong.

My clothes face left because my closet opening is on right, if it were left, then I would hang them to the right. I'd rather see the front of my clothes when searching for what to wear.
  16. Vera Whiting
Never noticed that my clothes face left and in righthanded husband's wardrobe they face right! Brilliant!
  17. Joyce Carter
If I ever went shopping for clothes with my mother she always said I hung the clothes back on the rail the wrong way. I hung them facing left (I am left handed) and my right handed mother hung them facing right.

I think there are several factors involved in this, depending on where the wardrobe is located and which door is opened.

You probably want to see the front of the clothes when you approach them/open the door. My wardrobe is on the left, so when I open the door, they're facing right. I'm sure if the wardrobe was located on the right, they'd be the other way round.

I hang my clothes to the right, I put them in and pull them out using my left hand and the front of my shirt is then facing me, if I put them the left way then the back would face me when taking them out. Another thing I've noticed I place to the right are my cutlery in the draw as I remove with my left, so then they are ready to be used in the correct hand.

I feel like I'm missing something. It has to do with the design of the closet, how the doors open, if it's a walk-in or not. But I use my left hand to insert the hanger...the direction of the hook depends on the closet.
  21. Andrew
I do not think the direction of clothes hanging is determined so much by handedness as much as the location of the bar to the door. I think shirts, et.al. will be hung to face you when you walk into the closet or open the door.

I am a leftie, but could not vote in the poll because .....

I hang my clothes facing the centre of the wardrobe - so clothes on the left fact right, and clothes on the right face left. Go figure!

Related to your promo of left-handed scissors... when i was about to begin first grade, my mom found a catalogue of left-handed school supplies. She sent it to my grandmother, a teacher and mother of my left-handed dad. I received, among other things, a pair of left-handed scissors. I was unable to use them! To this day I cannot make them work and I throw a ball with my right hand. What gives? Btw, I write, eat and hang my clothes as a Leftie!

Thanks for any insight. Oh, and one more thing... butter knives drive me CRAZY because most are very definitely resigned for right-handed folks.
  24. Sarah
I couldn’t vote because some of my clothes faced right and some faced left! I am quite an untidy person so don’t know if that’s why. My other half is right handed and all his shirts were facing left.
  25. Dianne Jones
I actually learned to hang my clothes this way in the military. I don’t remember how I hung them prior to that.
  26. F J Blackburn
My wardrobe looks like yours, Keith.
  27. catkins
I think hanging clothes up facing right is the correct way to do it for left-handed people. It means I can take my clothes out with my left hand and they're facing the correct way. Or am I missing the point here...?!

I am left handed and my clothes hang facing right. My husband is right handed and his clothes face left. We have a walk in wardrobe and one long rail. My clothes are on the left had side and I use my left hand to pull out garments to look at and also to hang them in the right slots (by type of clothes or colour). The reverse applies to my husband.

I don't know if it's a left-handed thing or not; it's just the way I've always done it. My wife, when she first moved in with me, asked me how I liked my clothes hung. I showed her, and they've been that way ever since. I have no idea if she hangs hers differently (she's right-handed) as her wardrobe is somewhere I just do not go.

Could you please do a poll re tying shoelaces. As a left-hander, I always do the first loop on the left - I remember as a child my uncle trying to teach me to tie my laces and telling me I was doing it wrong, until he said, "Oh, of course, you're left-handed aren't you?"
  31. ERIN A. WELCH
I CAN ONLY WRITE LEFT HANDED, NOT RIGHT! I MUST USE SCISSORS, CUT FOOD,I PLAYED SPORTS RIGHT SIDED EVERYTHING ELSE HAS TO BE W/MY RIGHT SIDE THAT JUST SEEMS LIKE MY MOST "COORDINATED" SIDE.
  32. Dee Riley
Some things I hang facing right, example I want to see what is printed on a tee shirt. Otherwise it does not matter.
  33. Barry Austin
I'm a left hander living in a right handed world and just follow the flow, my clothes hang right.
  34. Rhys
I always hang mine facing right, but then my mother was quite strict! I have always wondered why it took me so long to undo the buttons to take the shirt of the hanger - now I know.

From tonight - I will hang them the other way!
  35. Andres
I'm wondering whether eye-dominance has more to do with this than being right- or left-handed. I'm left-handed and do everything left-handed, but I'm right-eye dominant, so I get very confused if I have to aim and shoot. When I hang my clothes up, I'm arranging or looking at them with my right eye so I have to hang them up as a righty.
  36. Corinne
I'm a lefty but face my clothes right. Guess I was brain washed. LOL
  37. CANDACE GEISER
I'd never thought about it before. I checked- I'm ambidextrious and all mine hang right, but my husband, who is a complete lefty, hangs his left.

As I grew up in a family of left handlers, and my husband is also left handed (& hangs his clothes facing left as well), until now it never occurred to me that others might hang their clothes the other way.

Our (totally right handed) daughter also hangs her clothes facing left - indoctrinated from birth, I suspect. Now living in a “share house”, she’s realised that she arranges things in her home for left-handers (eg hand soap on the left of the basin, electric kettle with the handle on the left, etc).

It’s great to know us lefties get our way at least some of the time.
  39. J.Lloyd
I also file paperwork with papers facing in opposite direction of a right hander
  40. Mike Rex
I always hang my clothes facing left.

I do hang my clothes facing left -- but I was raised by two right-handed parents and my only sister is right-handed. Thus, I don't feel panicky if the clothing is facing to the right. Like noticing handedness in general, left feels correct and right feels usual.

As for sitting on the right of a place, I have noticed that I sit on the right in church every time. Well, I tried the left, but for once it felt backwards. I think the sensation of being able to reach something on my left is more important in that case, because I never reach with my right hand.
