Synesthesia and left-handedness

We had an email from Left Handers Club member Peggie recently that got us thinking.  She said:
Composition VII - Wassily Kandinsky“I am curious if a lot of left handers have synesthesia. Synesthesia is a form of “crossed wires” in the brain that causes a wide variety of interesting phenomenon such as tasting words, painting music and many others. To me people are a color, not an aura and it is very difficult to explain. Interestingly, I discovered when my son was about 8 yrs old he saw many people the same colors as I do. I have always been referred to as “wierd” in my family because I was the only lefty and this just adds to the weirdness. However, I am proud to be a lefty and unique in this world of boring right handers.”

Young Left Handers Head Back To School

Left handed children back to schoolSeptember is here and it’s time for the school year to start. Education is a chore for most children, but when you are left handed and trying to learn in a world designed for righties, it can become a real challenge.
Fortunately, our schools have come on a long way from the days of lefties being hit on the hand with a ruler when they use the ‘wrong’ hand to do work. But trying to do school work with the wrong pen, scissors, ruler or notebook can still feel like punishment!
Fortunately we’ve got great help, advice and products for left-handed school children of all ages. If you have a little lefty of your own starting school, then we hope you find this newsletter useful. And if you know of any left-handed children, or parents of left-handed children, please forward it on.
