A Left-Handed Royal Arrival?

Prince William, Kate and Prince GeorgeSpring is well and truly here, and a new royal arrival is due to make its debut on the world stage. Yes, it’s time again for the cameras of the world’s media to be pointed at a small notice board in front of Buckingham Palace that will formally announce the arrival of William and Kate’s second child.
As we wrote last year, Prince William (himself a famous lefty) is keen for George to follow in the proud family tradition of left-handedness. With George fast approaching his second birthday, he should be showing clear signs now of hand preference. Have you spotted any photos of videos that show which hand he prefers? If so, please let us know by adding a comment below.

Left Handedness Around the World

Researchers agree that on average around 1 in 10 people in the world are left-handed. So you would expect the same number of left-handed people everywhere in the world wouldn’t you? Well, it turns out that isn’t the case.

Whereas in the developed Western world (North America and Western Europe) the figures generally put left-handedness at about 12% of the population, in other countries it is lot lower. For example, one study found an average 13% of Canadians were left-handed but in Mexico the figure was just 2.5%. Furthermore a separate study of Japanese schoolchildren had found only 0.7% were left-handed!

There seem to be two factors that affect the statistics. One factor is how much the culture puts an importance on ‘conformity’. There are still plenty of countries in the world where any ‘differences’, such as being left-handed, are actively discouraged. People may well be naturally left-handed, but it is trained out of them at an early age so the usual measures of left-handedness (e.g. ‘what hand do you write with?’) will mean fewer lefties showing up in the research. Another theory put forward is the difficulties with forming complex written characters with your left hand. One survey found the lowest levels of left-handedness were in Korea (2%), Japan (3%) and Taiwan (5%). We are all aware of the challenges of left-handed letter formation. That difficulty must become multiplied exponentially when you are working with a character set where the direction of your stroke can form part of the character’s meaning.

Back to School for Summer Term

Left handed pens and pencils for childrenThe school summer term starts soon, and for many pupils, that means it’s time for the dreaded exams! Don’t send your left-handed children into battle with their exams without making sure they are armed with the best writing and drawing equipment available. With the correctly designed left-handed equipment, their writing will be clear, effortless and smudge free.

It is obvious in the photo that Prince George prefers using his left hand for picking flowers for his mummy.
