Do you have a lot of lefthanders in your family?   You could help with some important research if you are willing to answer a few short questions – see our article here for more information.

1. Positive left-handed sayings

We often see so many negative things said about lefthanders and language often works against us so we thought we would start this newsletter by focussing on some POSITIVE quotes and sayings about lefthanders. Here are some of the best ones we have seen and you can use this link to see this article online and add any more you know by commenting there.

“If the left side of your brain controls the right side of your body, and the right side of your brain controls the left side of your body, then left-handed people must be the only ones in their right minds.”
~ W.C. Fields

I may be left-handed but I am always right!
This was actually created many years ago by Keith Milsom and his father Reg when brainstorming for ideas to put on badges, but can now be found all over the internet. We actually did a set of 3 badges to change depending on your mood – the picture on the right is from one of our very old catalogues (they are not available any more).Left-handers are wired into the artistic half of the brain, which makes them imaginative, creative, surprising, ambiguous, exasperating, stubborn, emotional, witty, obsessive, infuriating, delightful, original, but never, never, dull.

The next two are a couple of variations on a theme:

Everybody is born right handed, but only the strongest of people are able to over come it!

Everybody is born left handed, you only turn right handed after you commit your first sin

An early biblical reference to left-handers being very talented fighters:
And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword. Among all this people there were 700 chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth and not miss.
Bible: Judges 20 v 15

Origin unknown, but we like it.

3. The left-handed eating story continues

We wrote an article about eating left-handed recently and included a comment from one of of our readers who was battling her son's school because they were forcing him to change hands and eat right-handed. We had a lot of feedback on the story and it has now been picked up by the national press with an article in the Daily Mail online version here.

A complaint was lodged after an angry parent said staff at Kersey Primary School near Ipswich, Suffolk made his two left-handed children switch their knives and forks to eat in the standard right-handed manner, with the knife in their right hand and fork in their left. Teachers told him that swapping the cutlery helped ‘improve dexterity' and was part of a child's ‘personal, social and health education'. [really??!]

Does changing to eat right handed REALLY improve dexterity?

Well… in a strict sense it might, because “dexterity”
actually means

effective use of the right hand! (dexter being “right” in Latin)

The school has admitted encouraging pupils to eat in a ‘conventional manner', but denied putting pressure on the children to eat right-handed. An independent inspector has looked into the complaint and found that the school was doing nothing wrong, but the father has now lodged an appeal against that decision and asked the school's governors to look into it further.

The father said he was being supported by fellow parents at the school and we at the Left Handers Club think it is entirely wrong to force a child to change their normal way of eating. If you agree, please add a comment to the online version of this article and we will make sure the parents see them all.
