Spoiler: yes, a bit. But probably not in the way you've been told.

If you're left-handed, there's a good chance you've heard at least one of these over the years.

"You're right-brained."

"Left-handers think differently."

"Your brain works backwards."

After helping left-handers since 1968, Anything Left-Handed has heard them all. Some sound wonderfully convincing. Others make us smile. Modern brain research has finally started separating the myths from the facts, and the truth turns out to be more interesting than the mythology ever was.

So, are left-handed brains different?

Yes — but not because they're reversed.

For decades, many people believed left-handers simply used the opposite side of the brain from everyone else. It sounded logical. It also turned out to be wrong.

Around 90–95% of right-handers process language mainly in the left side of the brain. Around 70–75% of left-handers do exactly the same. The difference isn't that left-handers use the opposite side — it's that they're more likely to have language spread across both sides, or arranged in some less usual way.

Think of it like two sat navs planning the same journey. One chooses the motorway. The other prefers the country roads. Different route, same destination.

What the research has actually found

One of the biggest findings of the last decade is that left-handed brains are more varied. Not better. Not worse. Just more varied in the way they're organised.

Researchers comparing almost 32,000 brain scans found subtle but real differences between left- and right-handers in areas linked with movement, language and vision. The important word is subtle. Scientists aren't describing a different type of brain. They're describing more than one perfectly normal way to organise one.

Why scientists changed their minds about left-handers

For years, left-handers were often left out of brain research because they made the results messier. Researchers wanted everyone to fit neatly into the same pattern.

Left-handers had other ideas.

Today that "complication" is seen as one of the most valuable parts of the work. Studying left-handed brains has shown there is no single template every healthy brain has to follow — and that tells us something about how all brains develop, not only left-handed ones.

The writing puzzle

A small study published in 2024 added an unexpected wrinkle. Left-handers are known to show more variation in how spoken language is organised, and this study hinted that writing may not follow the same pattern.

It involved only sixty people and the findings are a long way from settled. But it raises an odd possibility: speaking and writing, despite both being language, may not be run by quite the same parts of the brain.

The bottom line

Left-handed brains aren't backwards, and they aren't a different model. They're another perfectly normal way of organising a human brain.

That's a far more interesting story than "lefties are artistic".
