Left-Handers Day 13th August – What's it all about?

On 13th August 1992 the Club launched International Left-Handers Day, an annual event when left-handers everywhere can celebrate their sinistrality and increase public awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed.     This event now has an offical Left-Handers Day website, visited by thousands of people,   and is celebrated worldwide in a variety of ways, including left-v-right sports matches,   left-handed tea parties , pubs using left-handed corkscrews where patrons drink and play pub games with the left hand only, and nationwide “Lefty Zones” where left-handers creativity, adaptability and sporting prowess are celebrated, whilst right-handers are encouraged to try out everyday left-handed objects to see just how awkward it can feel using the wrong equipment!
See more ideas on how to mark the day.

These events have contributed more than anything else to the general awareness of the difficulties and frustrations left-handers experience in everyday life, and have successfully led to improved product design and greater consideration of our needs by the right-handed majority – although there is still a long way to go!!

All year round, we fit in with home and office layouts designed for right-handers’ comfort – put up with doors, cookers, sinks, computer mice, keyboards and desks that are efficient for right-handers to work at, and hundreds of times every day we contort ourselves using back-to-front tools and gadgets that make us look clumsy and awkward in our efforts to make them to work…

But NOT on Left Handers Day! Because on this special day, it is your chance to GET YOUR OWN BACK on your right-handed friends colleagues and family, by designating your personal space as a LEFTY ZONE where everything must be done left-handed!

The idea of Left-Handers Day is of everyone to celebrate in fun, practical ways, making right handed family members/friends/colleagues realise how “dextrous” (right-handed term, hmm…..) we have to be because we are constantly adapting a right-handed world to work for a left-hander.   Getting right handers to do everything left-handed for the day is a great way to make the point!

Me and mum are the only ones in the family that are left-handed , but in school everyone is right handed even my freinds so I felt left out but then mum found left handers club and i feel a lot more normal.
