I have been playing professionally since the age of nine, and thats 50 years plus, it has always been difficult obtaining left handed instruments, and in throughout the 1970s and 80s makers would charge up to 20% more. left handed people are more used to using there right hand than right handed are at using their left, simply having to grow up in a right handed world, and having to be more adaptable. i have built my own instruments and converted many i know even today ,some people do not realise that even after re-aligning the bridge/nut etc.. for correct harmonics some guitars internal bracing is not even and designed to be played right handed. -especially flamenco guitars. Invisible problems on well played older right handed instruments such as a slight right hand twist [heavy handed playing] in the neck ,can be a problem... I play flamenco so i have mine made now,as there is nothing of any decent standard made LH . but at the end of the day, in my opinion- right or left, makes no difference to the skill and creative levels you can aspire to.

Left handed tutor book at odds with Tab? I cannot find any issue, the lowest line is string six, the top line is string one. On a correctly strung guitar looking down at the strings the order is 6,5,4,3,2,1 whatever way round you play.

Learning to transpose right hand chord boxes is a skill that left handed players learn thru experience. Left handed tutor books will give you a grounding, it should also give tips on using right handed materials. The most important tip is that left and right handed playing are mirror images of each other.

At first it is best to use left handed neck diagrams for scales. As you gain experience you're able to start using right handed neck diagrams; I just view them as 'stacked tab' read the bottom line from left to right (what you play is right to left and at first this can be a little confusing) and when you run out of dots on that line, move up one line and repeat the process as per the previous line.

Reading Tab or staff notation and translating it into sound is a skill and takes practice; whether you're left or right handed, Music Reading for Guitar by David Oakes adresses the issue of sightreading staff notation.

I heard a lot of rubbish about why left handers should play right handed; Joe's experience lays all that to rest. Play which ever way feels comfortable for you has always been my motto. There are left handers who play right handed and vice versa. As left handers we are a minority so accept the fact that the range of guitars available is limited but there are models across the price range from Squier/Epiphone to Fender/Gibson and as long as you do your homework before buying you shouldn't end up with a dud. As regards trying out guitars in a shop my view is that anything on display is secondhand, if the sealed box model seems a little different then it's probably due to how it's been set up, thats no great crisis, you can adjust it, or take it to a guitar technician.

Just one thing Joe; what do you mean by strung 'upside down'? if when playing, string 6 is nearest the ceiling and string 1 is nearest the floor and the strings are in the order 6,5,4,3,2,1 then the guitar is strung correctly regardless of whether you're left or right handed.

When I originally left a comment I clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove me from that service? Thanks!
